The concept of Supply
Chain Management has recently stepped into the
limelight of corporate professionals and academia.
However, its roots can be traced with the evolution
of trade itself.
Evidences show that supply chains were
present right from the time when mankind understood
the need of merchandising and distribution.
Logistics is not only used in military
but also by managers in almost all spheres of
activity to fine tune the process of delivery
through various supply lines with the primary
objective of being able to deliver not just 'in
time' but also at 'the desired place'.
There are numerous examples of success
achieved in battles and wars of ancient history
due to just in time delivery. In the military
context, a war could be lost, if one is not able
to deliver reliably and on time. Supply lines
could be strategically choked to cause havoc in
the enemy camps.
